The Best Squash Players on the Planet

at Grand Central Terminal, January 18-24, 2013

The iconic J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions will bring all the best squash players on the planet to NYC from January 18–24, 2013 to vie for the coveted title in Grand Central Terminal. For the 16th year, tens of thousands of spectators will be stopped in their tracks to watch some of the world’s finest athletes compete on the four walled glass court in Vanderbilt Hall during what has now become known as Squash Week in New York City

“Sometimes you look up in wonder when you think of where you are,” says defending champion Nick Matthew of England, of the majestic Grand Central Terminal venue. “The players want to play in this atmosphere day in and day out – the crowds are amazing and the energy is unbelievable

The world’s largest squash spectator event, the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions is the only sports championship hosted annually in Grand Central Terminal. “The Tournament of Champions is both a great gathering of the world’s best squash athletes and an empowering community event which highlights and supports the work of our tournament charities StreetSquash and CItySquash. We also inspire more than 200 amateur players who will play their best squash in the affiliated Grand Open tournament after watching these amazing professionals compete on the glass court,” says John Nimick, president of Squash Engine, Inc., the event promoter.

A Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Series Gold event, the 2013 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions has a 32-player men’s main draw and a 32-player qualification tournament.  Also sanctioned by the Women’s Squash Association (WSA), the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions will feature world class female players in a 16-player main draw and a 16-player qualification tournament. Individual tickets and patron packages are available at

J.P Morgan, a global financial services company, is returning as the Platinum title sponsor of the tournament for the fifth year.  Lexington Partners, a sponsor for fourteen consecutive years, also returns for the fifth year as the event’s gold sponsor.  The combination of the perennial sold-out stadium seating and the public viewing available on the front wall by what is expected to be more than 200,000 Grand Central commuters during tournament week makes the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions the largest squash spectator event in the world.

The championship debuted as the US Professional Championship in 1930 and was renamed the Tournament of Champions in 1993 when it was presented in the third of its four years at the Winter Garden in the World Financial Center.  The tournament then moved to Grand Central Terminal in 1995, where it’s annual presence since has been interrupted only by the Terminal’s renovation from 1996 -1998. The Tournament of Champions has truly lived up to its name – all but two of the titleholders have either been #1 in the world rankings or the winner of the annual World Open championship.

Shortlisted by the International Olympic Committee for consideration as an Olympic sport, squash is contested in all the major international multi-sport regional games and has been rated by Forbes magazine as the #1 healthiest sport based on cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, calories burned and risk of injury.  The sport was first played in England more than 100 years ago and is now popular in more than 120 countries.  There are 15 million squash players worldwide and 800,000 in the United States.

The J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions is supported by Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, Comcast| NBCUniversal, Infinia, The Campbell Apartment, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and Dunlop.  The Westin New York Grand Central is the tournament’s Official Hotel. The tournament’s official charities are the urban youth enrichment programs StreetSquash and CitySquash. The J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions is operated by Squash Engine, Inc., an affiliate of longtime management company Event Engine, Inc., the largest commercial squash promotional company in the world.
